Weddington VS Ardrey Kell

Weddington, North Carolina

Saturday's down south are known for tailgating and college football. Thanks to mother nature not cooperating Friday night, we got an extra helping of high school football this Saturday.

The Weddington Warriors looked to start their state title defense against the visiting Ardrey Kell Knights, a budding rivalry that gets more intense each time the teams face off.

This August evening had an abnormal chill in the air for this time of the year. When the ball was kicked off the temperature was hovering around 65 with overcast after a steady mist had been falling for of the day. The field conditions were not the best, after the heavy amounts of rain that was falling for the majority of the week prior, we wondered just how big of a factor that would be for both teams.

The class of 2021 5 star recruit Will Shipley started this season just like he left off in the state championship game in December, with a touchdown run. The Warriors held a 7-0 lead at halftime, the first half consisted of multiple penalties and sloppy plays that were intensified by the field conditions.

The second half was a completely different story, with an offensive explosion from both teams. First drive of the second half, Weddington brought in senior and Virginia Tech baseball commit Dusty Mercer as a wildcat quarterback. Mercer instantly made an impact, he rumbled off a huge run and then hit sophomore Landyn Backey on a screen pass that he took all the way in for the touchdown.

From that point on it was all Weddington. Junior Trey Gordon who came over this season from the rival Sun Valley Spartans,  joined in on the scoring with a touchdown run to put the Warriors up 21-0 and than it was starting quarterback Dante Casciola's turn as he scrambled out of the pocket and hit the All American Shipley for the touchdown, extending the Warriors lead to 28-0.

The Ardrey Kell Knights would not go down without a fight, after the offense struggled throughout the first three quarters, the fourth quarter was a completely different story. Knights drove down to the two yard line and senior quarterback Jared Jospeh decided to take things into his own hands as he ran it in from the goal line to give the Knights their first points of the season.

Later in the quarter Joseph connected with freshman Brooks Stankavage on a nice pitch and catch for the touchdown. That would be the last points either team would score in this contest, meaning the Weddington Warriors would get the victory 28-14.

Both teams fought hard, and for Weddington this is how you want to start off your state championship defense, with a well executed first game of the season.

For Ardrey Kell and first year Head Coach Greg Jachym, this game gives you something to build on as both the offense and defense start to gel. The Knights are going to be a formidable opponent for whomever they face as the season continues.

Weddington: 1-0, next week travel to Indian Trail Porter Ridge Pirates

Ardrey Kell: 0-1, next week host Charlotte East Mecklenburg Eagles

Upcoming Season

Fam,

Starting this season we will be doing something that has never been done before. From Cherokee County all the way to Dare County and everywhere in between, we will be traveling each week to live audio broadcast our game of the week. The team and myself could not be anymore excited, we will be visiting a different school each week, and will be traveling many of miles this season.

As always this is about giving back to the community and bringing us together to support these student athletes, schools, and communities. No school is too small to be covered and we are not going to be only doing a specific county or team, this is state wide.

We look forward to seeing many of new programs and communities. We will have more on the program shortly and how to listen, and of course it is going to be free of charge to all of our listeners. Thank you all for all of the support. Continue to spread the word, and as always without you none of this is possible.

Best Regards,

R.M. Mitcham.

What would you like to see us include each week?

This is something the community has been asking us to do, and we are happy to be able to bring this to life.

2nd annual NC Best High School Rivalry Contest

To all of our supporters and followers,

Thank you for making this rivalry poll a success, without all of you none of this would have even been possible.

Congratulations to our winning rivalry the Richmond County Raiders and the Scotland County Fighting Scots. The communities both came together with over 1,000 votes to show the entire state what both these counties already know, that your rivalry is the best.

The goal was to bring together communities all across the state. Not only have them bond together when they're normally fierce rivals but also to bring awareness to the schools, coaches, and most importantly the student athletes.

We are honored that this contest has had the impact that it did, they say Texas has the best High School Football fans, but after this contest we are convinced North Carolina does. From Cherokee County all the way to Dare county, you the supporters have showed up and showed out. What other state can do that?

As always, never stop grinding, if you believe it you can accomplish it.

Uniform Project

To Everyone who has supported us,

Here it is, the first edition of our uniform project. This has long been something we have wanted to do, with countless hours going into this. Between reaching out to coaches and schools for photos, to researching how many potential combinations a school has; and we aren't done yet!

Our goal with this whole project is to provide the high school football community and all those uniform lovers out there with an entire database of you guessed it-uniforms! Look through, check out everyone's uniforms, get hyped for the upcoming season, and let's come together as a football community. When you're searching through the project, we hope it brings you some joy.

It is by no means complete. As the word continues to get spread we will be adding more teams and their uniform combinations. To a community that has given so much to us, like everything we do, this is for you!

Any questions comments or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out.

Never quit grinding,

R.M. Mitcham and the whole Friday Nights In Carolina Team.
